Web 2.0 Haters

I got a random Facebook connection request today. All of a sudden I get an email, IM and my mobile beeps to tell me some guy in Australia wants to be my friend. I dislike the lack of context, where is the accompanying note explaining why he wants to be my friend? I haven’t logged into Facebook in a while, and took a few moments to look at the recent activity of friends.

I found this link, Ten Things I Hate About You, Web 2.0, in Stowe Boyd’s Facebook notes (congrats on John Edwards subscribing to your Twitter feed). Speaking of Twitter, my Twitter feed.

My thoughts on the Ten Things, which won’t make sense unless you read them.

- Not to belittle people’s hard work but user-generated content is fine until someone comes up with a better phrase (and they haven’t, yet).

- Try unsubbing from Techmeme, lots of strong voices outside of the insider/415 sphere of influence. I find regular

- How about one todo list that actually works well? Basecamp could be the perfect app if they continued to innovate instead of freezing at version 1.0.

- The more startups the better, but more distribution across verticals. No more calendars or video sharing services. Youtube won round one, let’s move on.

- It’s not that there is too much information, we need quicker access to more contextually relevant info. The web doesn’t have nearly enough info, that’s quite a throwaway statement. Go read this Edge article with Danny Hillis and you’ll see that the web in it’s current incarnation is a baby step towards useful teaching and information retrieval. An inspiring article that got my mind going in a number of new directions.
