Making Web Apps More Like Desktop Applications

I am constantly amazed that more website are not using drag and drop capabilities of Scriptalicious or other Javascript libraries to enhance the user experience. Panic Software has a nice drag-n-drop downloader that’s simple and fun. I’ve been spending more time with Adobe Air applications which promise to bring the desktop to the web, or the web to the desktop, or make the web more like the desktop, you get the idea. Early days for these types of apps, they can only get better.

What I can’t believe more is how many large webpage systems of various sorts (Wikis, CMSs, Blogs, etc) don’t have things like this built in more as well. The technology is out there, but the adoption is just slow.
I believe some of this is in part that most of the people making those systems to a large degree see the back end as being the most important part (which to a huge degree it is) but aren’t UI people themselves so when asked to work on the UI parts and intergration… they just don’t want to as much (hurts Open Source projects mainly)
