I had a conversation with a startup yesterday where we spoke at length about how to make it as difficult as possible to leave the service once you have added your “user-generated content.”
Most of the time companies like this have sketchy business models and are afraid of what is going to happen when people get bored of the service and move on to the next big thing.
The answer is simple, the right results often elusive. Create a compelling user experience that makes people want to come back for more, often.
For example: YouTube won the first round over Google Video because it’s easier to use. Myspace gets more traffic than YouTube, but what does that mean for the rest of the world that’s not on Myspace? I would think most people won’t join a social networking site just to store videos on Myspace.
