State of the Blogosphere, October, 2006

For all the grief I give Technorati (often broken, b0rked indexes and river of news style uselessness), I visit the site many times a day because Dave and the crew are starting to release more useful features, including the authority of posters and they are asking interesting questions about what we can learn from different types of bloggers.
Every quarter Technorati releases the State of the Blogosphere, and this quarter’s news continues past trends and sheds light on new ones.
Last wee at Social Media Boston there was a lot of talk at our table about gaming Technorati, the usefulness of tags and generally wondering about the role both will play in what is being called, gag, PR 2.0.
I won’t go into a lot of detail about the report, go read it, I guarantee you won’t think about blogs the same way afterwards.
- 100k new blogs every day.
- Large percentage are splogs, or spam blogs.
- Daily posting volume of 1.3 blog posts daily.
- Today, the blogosphere is doubling in size approximately every 230 days.
- About 4% of new splogs get past Technorati’s filters, even if it is only for a few hours or days.
- There is a strong correlation between the aging and post frequency of blogs and their authority and Technorati ranking.
Stats geeks rejoice, lots of juicy datapoints.
